William James Quigly was born in Brigden, Ontario on 22 January 1899 to Sarah Quigly. At the age of 19, William volunteered with the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 27 May 1918 at London, Ontario. He began his service with the Canadian Army Medical Corps (CAMC) Training Depot as a Private.
After a brief period in the hospital, Private Quigly boarded a ship in Vancouver on 11 October 1918, deploying to Siberia on 26 October, and being assigned to the 11th Stationary Hospital. In particular, he was attached to the Unit Supply Depot in Vladivostok for “duty, rations & quarters[.]” (Ref A)
In December of 1918, he was promoted to Acting Corporal and placed in charge of the Army Service Corps Depot in Vladivostok. On 11 February 1919, Acting Corporal Quigly was promoted to Acting Sergeant, and a month later was posted to the Base Supply Depot.
His time in the service nearing its end, Sergeant Quigly boarded the S.S. Monteagle, returning to Canada on 20 June 1919. He was discharged for demobilization on 27 June 1919, with plans to return to live with his mother in Sarnia, Ontario.
