Joseph Henry Huff was born in Brigden, Ontario on 30 March 1894 to Samuel and Katherine Huff. Forced to leave his farm, he was conscripted into the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 3 January 1918 at London, Ontario. He joined as a Private with the 1st Depot Battalion, Western Ontario Regiment.
Private Huff deployed to England and arrived on 16 February 1918. He was posted to the 4th Canadian Reserve Battalion in Bramshott. He deployed to France in May 1918 with the 18th Battalion. In August 1918, he suffered a severe shell injury to his right arm and thighs. He was treated in Witley, England, until September, when he was moved to the Western Ontario Regiment Depot.
Following the Armistice, Private Huff returned to Canada and was discharged from the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 23 January 1919. He intended to live in Sarnia, Ontario after discharge.
