Murdoch McRae was born in Brigden, Ontario on 28 September 1897 to Alexander and Lilly McRae.  While living as a Farmer in Brigden, McRae applied for exemption from conscription under the Military Service Act. The tribunal for his request was sat on 10 November 1917, and likely resulted in his request being denied. McRae was conscripted into the Canadian Expeditionary Force in London, Ontario as a Private on 29 May 1918.

Private McRae started out at the 1st Depot Battalion Western Ontario Regiment (WOR) prior to deploying to England in August of 1918.  He was posted to the 4th Canadian Reserve Battalion in Witley, UK.  With the Armistice declared on 11 November 1918, he was granted “leave with free warrant” (Ref A) in January of 1919.  His status was changed to “On Command” (Ref A) possibly meaning he could be recalled at any time, but was not regularly employed at the Canadian Corps Camp in Bramshott, England until March of 1919.

On 13 July 1919, after returning to Canada, Private Murdoch McRae was discharged from the CEF, under the demobilization.  He returned to his home in Brigden, Ontario.

Murdoch McRae passed away on 7 September 1978. He is buried in Stewart Cemetery in Merlin, Ontario.
