John Wellington Olds was born in Brigden, Ontario on 24 December 1894 to George and Eliza Olds. While working as a Farmer John was conscripted into the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 21 May 1918 in Calgary, Alberta. He started out as a Private with the 1st Depot Battalion, Alberta Regiment.
Only two months later, Private Olds departed from Canada, arriving in Liverpool, UK in August of 1918. There, he was taken on strength with the 21st Reserve Battalion. In October, he was placed in medical isolation, having contracted Mumps. He was discharged from the hospital one month later. He remained in England for the remainder of the war, returning to Canada in June 1919 and being discharged due to demobilization. He likely returned to Spennymoor, Alberta.
