Henry Nelson was born in Brigden, Ontario on 11 November 1895. While working as a clerk at a store in Brigden, Henry was conscripted into the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 18 June 1918. At that time, he served with the Western Ontario Regiment (WOR) 1st Depot Battalion as a Private.
Two weeks into his service, on the 28th of June, Private Nelson reported to the hospital suffering from chronic appendicitis. At that time, Private Nelson reported having had “5 or 6 attacks each lasting 1-2 weeks.” (Ref A)
According to his file, a “Bad cold in head and on chest commenced while travelling on foot from Montreal to Halifax, July 1918.” (Ref A) He was admitted to the ship hospital (on the troop ship taking he and other soldiers from Halifax to England) for three days, two of which he had a fever of 103 degrees. In August 1918, Private Nelson arrived in England and was assigned to the 4th Reserve Battalion. Four days following his arrival, he reported to the hospital. The examination document states he was “in poor spirit.” (Ref A)
Private Nelson was diagnosed with bronchitis, and remained in the hospital in Bramshott, UK until 30 August. Unfortunately, he was admitted to the 4th Canadian General Hospital in Basingstoke, with bronchitis once more. This kept him in the hospital until 21 November, after the war had ended.
Returning to Canada, Private Nelson was discharged, having been found medically unfit on 28 February 1919.
