Harry Richard Tuddenham was born to Elizabeth Tuddenham on 1 October 1891 in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England. On 13 October 1915, he left his work as a farmer and enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force at London, Ontario. He began his service as a Private with the 33rd Overseas Battalion.
Private Tuddenham deployed to England aboard the S.S. Lapland on 26 March 1916. He then deployed to France on 7 May 1916 and joined the Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR). With the RCR he was attached to the Trench Mortar Battery in July.
On 16 September 1916, Private Harry Richard Tuddenham was killed in action. According to the War Diaries of the RCR, on the day Private Tuddenham was killed, the RCR has been ordered to proceed to USNA HILL, and later ordered to attack a location called ZOLLERN GRABEN. They came under shelling and at the end of the day set up camp at a location called TARA HILL. The final entry for that day’s war diary reads:
“The total casualties as far as can be ascertained amount to 1 officer killed, 4 wounded, and about 279 [other ranks] killed wounded and missing.”
Private Tuddenham was buried in the Courcelette British Cemetery in France. His headstone reads:
