Peter Gauld was born in 1876 in Lambton County, Ontario to William and Nancy Gauld.  He served with the South African Constabulary, a force deployed to South Africa between 1900 and 1902 during the Boer War.


During the First World War, around the age of 40, Peter Gauld enlisted with the British Army.  He served with the 1st Battalion of the King’s Royal Rifle Corps in France, rising to the rank of Sergeant (also spelled Serjeant in his records.  He was killed on 9 March 1916, dying of wounds received in service.  He is buried in the Bethune Town Cemetery in Pas de Calais, France.  His headstone reads:
