Alvin John Henry Nesbit was born in Brigden, Ontario on 2 September 1897 to Alice Nesbit. At the age of 20, while working as a vehicle repairman, he was conscripted into the Canadian Expeditionary Force in February of 1918. From his conscription in London, he was enrolled with the 1st Depot Battalion, West Ontario Regiment as a Private.
In May, Private Nesbit was transferred to the Canadian Garrison Regiment in London, Ontario. At the beginning of August, he was posted to the Training Depot in Saint John, New Brunswick. On 23 September, Private Nesbit was taken on strength with the Number 6 Canadian Engineers Depot. While serving with the Engineers, he would have been referred to as a Sapper, rather than a Private. From 26 September to 4 October 1918, Sapper Nesbit reported to the hospital, suffering from bronchitis. In late November, he returned to the hospital, this time it as suspected he was suffering from Tuberculosis. This was likely disproven, as he was discharged from the hospital shortly thereafter.
With the Armistice declared on 11 November 1918, Private Nesbit was discharged on demobilization on 12 December 1918, intending to return to Brigden.
