Walter Riddell Browning was born on 31 March 1886 to Thomas and Agnes Browning in Port Lambton, Ontario.  Following the Military Service Act, he was conscripted to the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 9 January 1918 and assigned to the 1st Depot Battalion, Western Ontario Regiment.

Private Browning deployed to England aboard the S.S. Grampian, arriving on 16 February 1918.  He moved from the 4th Reserve Battalion in Bramshott to the 47th Battalion in Witley on 1 June.  He deployed to France, and was posted to the Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp.  He joined the 47th Battalion in the field on 17 August 1918.

On 2 September 1918, just a few weeks after reaching the field, Walter Riddell Browning was killed in action. His body was likely never recovered, and as such his name is inscribed on the Vimy Memorial in France.
