John Sheppard Young was born on 31 March 1897 in Sombra Township, Ontario to David and Elsie Young. On 9 January 1916 John Young left his farm and joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Brigden, Ontario. He began his service as a Private with the 149th Battalion.
Private Young arrived in England in April 1917 and was taken on strength with the 25th Reserve Battalion in Bramshott. Soon after, he was posted to the 161st Battalion. In January 1918 he received a Good Conduct Badge. In February 1918, Private Young deployed to the field with the 47th Battalion. In October of that year, he was promoted to Lance Corporal.
In January 1919, Lance Corporal Young received the Military Medal. While the presentation of the medal did not include a citation, the Military Medal was presented for acts of bravery by non-commissioned members of the military.
Lance Corporal Young returned to Canada and was discharged under demobilization on 12 Jun 1919. He intended to return to Wilkesport, Ontario.
John Sheppard Young was married to Nina Loreen Walker on 16 June 1923. While the date of his death is unknown, he passed sometime before his wife's own passing in 1966.
