James Coutts McBean was born on 25 October 1896 in Moore Township, Ontario, to John and Jean McBean.  While he worked as a farmer, he was conscripted into the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 27 May 1918 at London, Ontario.  He began as a Private with the 1st Depot Battalion, Western Ontario Regiment.

While posted to Wolseley Barracks in London, Ontario, Private McBean contracted Measles and was hospitalized from mid-June to early July.  He did not deploy overseas before the end of the war.

In January 1919, likely while on a leave of absence, Private McBean was discharged from the Canadian Expeditionary Force via a letter from the OC of the 1st Depot Battalion.

James Coutts McBean passed away in 1988, and is buried in Bear Creek Cemetery in Brigden, Ontario.
