Harold MacKinnon Phillips was born on 29 November 1892 in Courtright, Ontario. He left his farm to enlist with the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 23 September 1916 at London, Ontario. He began his service as a Gunner with the 64^th Depot Battery.

Gunner Phillips deployed to England and arrived in Liverpool on 30 November 1916. He was transferred to the Reserve Artillery Canadian Training Depot in Shorncliffe. In March 1917, he was deployed as a reinforcement to the 3^rd Canadian Division Ammunition Column. In December 1917, Gunner Phillips took two weeks of leave.

On 10 April 1918, Gunner Harold MacKinnon Phillips was killed in action. He was buried in Ecoivres Military Cemetery in Mont-Saint Eloi, France. His headstone, commissioned by his mother, reads:
