Frederick William Raper was born on 6 May 1897 in Scarborough, Yorkshire, England to Fred and Fannie Raper. On 5 January 1916, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Brigden, Ontario, and started his service with the 149th Overseas Battalion as a Private.
Private Raper deployed to England in April 1917. There he joined the 25th Reserve Battalion at Bramshott, and subsequently the 161st at Witley a few months later. In February 1918, he joined the 4th Reserve Battalion.
Private Raper deployed to the field in March 1918 with the 47th Canadian Battalion. On 10 August 1918 he suffered a gunshot wound in his right arm near the elbow and was evacuated from the field. Medical personnel determined there was no damage to the bone, and it would not result in a disability to service.
On 16 January 1919, Private Raper returned to Canada. On 27 January, he was discharged for demobilization, and intended to live in Flint, Michigan afterwards.
Frederick William Raper passed away in 1983 in Genesee County, Michigan. He is buried in Fairview Cemetery in Linden, Michigan with his wife, Alice Buchanan Raper.
