Clarence Shaw was born on 26 October 1897 to John and Mary Shaw in Wilkesport, Ontario. On 3 February 1916, he left his farm behind and enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Brigden, Ontario. He began his service as a Private with the 149th Overseas Battalion.
Private Shaw deployed to England in April 1917 aboard the S.S. Lapland. He joined the 25th Reserve Battalion in Bramshott, but from September to November spent time in the military hospital. Once out of the hospital, he joined the 47th Battalion in the field in August 1918.
Private Clarence Shaw was killed in action on 3 September 1918. A note on his file seems to indicate he was killed at Vimy. His body was likely never recovered, and his name is recorded on the Vimy Memorial in France.
