Carlton Michael Ward was born on 18 February 1891 in Chatham Township, Ontario to Robert and Francis Ward. On 7 January 1916, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, and began as a Private with the 149th Overseas Battalion.
Private Ward arrived in England in March 1917, and was assigned to the 25th Reserve Battalion. Two months later he was posted to the 161st Battalion. In January 1918 he was awarded a good conduct badge. In March, he joined the 4th Canadian Reserve Battalion, and moved from Witley to Bramshott. In August of 1918, Private Ward joined the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles in the field.
In March 1919, Private Ward was posted to Bramshott to await his return to Canada. On 17 March, aboard the S.S. Olympic, Private Ward departed from Southampton to return to Canada. He was discharged for demobilization on 29 March 1919, and planned to return to Sombra, Ontario.
Carlton Ward was married on 4 November 1919 to Adelia Osborne Ward.
Carlton Michael Ward passed away on 12 February 1954. He is buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Sarnia, Ontario.
