Wilfred Keene (also spelled Wilford on some documentation) was born on 27 August 1893 in Sarnia, Ontario, to Charles and Maria Keene (brother of Frederick Arthur Keene).  He left his farm to enlist as a Private with the 149th Overseas Battalion on 22 January 1916.

While on the home front, Private Keene was found to have been Away Without Leave in April 1916, and forfeited one day’s pay as a result.

Private Keene deployed to England aboard the S.S. Lapland and arrived on 7 April 1917.  He was subsequently posted to the 25th Reserve Battalion in Bramshott.  Two months later, he was transferred to the 161st Battalion in Witley.  In January of 1918, Private Keene was awarded his first Good Conduct Badge.  In March, he was absorbed into the 4th Canadian Reserve Battalion.  Less than a month later, he deployed to the field with the 47th Battalion.

On 3 September 1918, Private Keene was killed in action.  His body was likely never recovered, as his name in inscribed immediately after the name of his brother, on the Vimy Memorial in France.
