Frederick Arthur Keene was born on 19 September 1896 in Moore Township, Ontario to Charles and Maria Keene (brother of Wilfred Keene).  He left his farm to enlist with the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 24 September 1915.  He began his service as a Private with the 70th Overseas Battalion.

Private Keene deployed to England aboard the S.S. Lapland, landing in May 1916.  From there, he was transferred to the 39th Battalion in Shorncliffe in July.  He then deployed to France with the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles (5th CMR).

On 15 September 1916, Private Keene was reported wounded and missing.  Nearly one year later, on 19 July 1917, Private Keene was officially declared to have died.  As his body was never recovered, his name is engraved alongside the name of his brother, on the Vimy Memorial in France.
