Rodman Roy Bennett was born in North Pelham, Ontario on 24 March 1894 to Annie and Chauncey Bennett (likely making him the brother of Lyall Bennett). On 18 January 1916, he left his work as a blacksmith and enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Brigden, Ontario. He started his service with the 149th Lambton Battalion as a Private.
Private Bennett was promoted to Lance Corporal in May 1916, and then to Corporal in June. In March of 1917, Corporal Bennett was found to be Away Without Leave (AWL). In May, having not returned for duty, Corporal Bennett was designated a Deserter. He did, however, return in 1918, and was posted to the 1st Depot Battalion before deployment overseas.
Bennett deployed to England in May 1918, with his documentation listing him as a Private once more. A few months later he was assigned to the Canadian Engineer Reinforcement Pool. He deployed to the field on 28 September 1918 with the 1st Battalion Canadian Engineers, and remained there until after the war ended.
Rodman Roy Bennett was discharged due to demobilization on 17 May 1919. He intended to live in Windsor, Ontario after the war.
