Norman Kimball McDonald was born on 20 August 1897 in Sombra, Ontario to John McDonald. He left his farm and enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 7 January 1916. He started as a Private with the 149th Overseas Battalion.
Private McDonald arrived in England in April 1917, and was posted to the Bramshott Segregation Camp. He left Canada as an Acting Corporal, but was reduced in rank to Private upon arrival in England. There, he was assigned to the 25th Reserve Battalion, and subsequently to the 161st Battalion.
In March 1918, Private McDonald deployed to the field with the 18th Battalion. In May he reported to the 5th Field Ambulance and was diagnosed with ICT (Inflammation of Connective Tissue) in his feet, and remained in medical care for two months. In July, he was released from the hospital and reported to the Canadian Corps reinforcement Camp. He rejoined the 18th Battalion in September.
Following the Armistice, he took a brief period of leave in England. Private McDonald returned to Canada, and was discharged, with the intent to return to Sarnia, Ontario.
Norman Kimball McDonald passed away in 1979, and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Sarnia, Ontario.
